From skiing to scuba diving and everything in between

With an incredible variety of terrain, from snowy mountain peaks and sun-baked deserts in the north to moist jungles and sandy beaches in the south, India offers an endless array of outdoor adventures. Trekking and mountaineering take in the beautiful mountain landscapes, while camel safaris explore the deserts and rafting trips follow the trail of India’s long rivers towards the coastline, where warm ocean waters beckon to scuba divers.

Camel safaris explore the arid deserts of India and are particularly popular in Rajasthan, with a range of options offered, from quick rides to multi-day trips, with camping under the spectacular desert skies. Horse riding is also available throughout India and explores all kinds of terrain, from rolling mountains and hills stations to dense jungles.

Every inch of India, from the tropical forests of the south to the jagged peaks of the north, offers a selection of trekking routes ranging from the gentle to the challenging. Particularly breathtaking are the foothills of the Himalayas, where temples and monasteries nestle among lakes, forests and mountain passes. The sandstone and granite outcrops of Karnataka are ideal for rock climbers, while full scale mountaineering is on offer in the northern mountain states. A number of resorts offer skiing in high altitude meadows, with the best snows falling between January and March.

The roaring rivers descending from India’s hills and mountains create ideal conditions for white water rafting. From north to south, a selection of adventures is available, with rapids ranging from moderate to adrenalin-pumping. The beaches and islands off India’s coastline are a paradise for scuba divers, with untouched coral atolls and a wealth of marine life. Surfers can also catch a wave off the Andaman Islands.

If none of these appeals, there are plenty of other unusual activities to try, from boat tours, caving and hang-gliding to paragliding or even zorbing (rolling down a mountain meadow in a giant plastic ball!).
