Architectural wonders from a time gone by
With its breathtaking mixture of architectural styles, India is home to some of the world’s most spectacular palaces, forts and monuments. A fascinating blend of religious beliefs, cultural norms and historical influences, Hindu temples coexist with Muslim mosques and Buddhist monasteries, while the monuments of the British Raj rub shoulders with the elaborate forts of the maharajas.
From the most famous of all its buildings, the Taj Mahal, to the elaborate lakeside creations of Udaipur, India boasts an incredible number of ornate palaces, a number of them still inhabited by the descendants of the maharajas of old. Stark reminders of the country’s tumultuous past, most of India’s cities are constructed around a fort. From the striking Red Fort in Delhi to the massive Agra Fort, the beautiful Amber Fort and the romantic sandstone structure of Jaisalmer, each has its own story to tell. Built to be impregnable, many of these majestic structures are built to make the most of a natural barrier, such as Jodpur’s magnificent Mehrangarh Fort, situated on a rocky crag above the city.
No less spectacular than the forts is India’s plethora of religious buildings, from complex Hindu temples to ornamental Jain buildings and characteristic Buddhist stupas. In the far north are the Buddhist monasteries, or gompas, with their distinctly Tibetan motifs.
