A shopper’s paradise
With its rich artistic heritage and incredible range of handicrafts, India is a dream destination for shopaholics. From bustling bazaars to suburban shopping malls and upmarket boutiques, the country offers endless opportunities for retail therapy, with a wide variety of prices.
While many regions in India are renowned for a specific type of handicraft, most of these products are readily available throughout the country. Textile production is India’s major industry and an incredible range of fabrics is available virtually everywhere. With an amazing variety of weaving and embroidery designs, a range of regional designs and patterns ensures potential buyers are spoilt for choice. Saris are a popular souvenir while, in many cities, tailor-made clothing, including the popular salwar kameez tunic and trouser combination, as well as a variety of Western designs, can be ordered at surprising short notice. In bigger cities, exclusive boutiques sell the latest offerings from the country’s top designers. Fine woollen shawls and delicate pashminas can also be purchased.
From ancient artistic techniques to modern designs, India is a treasure trove of sculptures, terracotta work and beautiful pottery, particularly the distinctive blue-glazed product of Jaipur. Fine wool and silk carpets are produced in both traditional and contemporary designs. India jewellery ranges from cheap but cheerful bangles to chunky silver folk pieces, as well as finely crafted gold and silver rings, anklets, earrings, toe rings, necklaces and bangles. Pearls are available in most seaside states and Hyderabad is particularly well known for its pearl creations. Candleholder, trays, bowls, ashtray and cookware are made out of copper and brassware, some inlaid with exquisite designs.
A wide variety of paintings, including the famous miniatures, are produced on paper, silk and cloth. Exquisite lacquered papier-mâché patterned with animals and flowers is made into bowls, boxes, letter holders, coasters, trays, lamps and other decorations. Traditional woodcarvings range from the more bulky but extremely worthwhile screens and tables to smaller souvenirs such as jewellery boxes and trays. Other Indian specialities include an incredible array of aromatic spices, sweet-smelling incense and the famous Darjeeling tea.
Haggling is an integral part of the Indian shopping experience, so, unless you are shopping in a department store or government emporium, expect to bargain hard for the best price!
