TIGERS AND OTHER WILDLIFE

The Jungle Book and more!

While India is best known as the home of the tiger, the country is also home to a fascinating variety of other animal, bird and reptile species. With some of the richest biodiversity in the world, India has a staggering 397 species of mammals, 1 232 birds and 460 reptiles. Guests can enjoy the wide range of scenery and exceptional wildlife in no less than 97 national parks and 486 wildlife sanctuaries.

Strictly protected under Project Tiger, India remains one of the only countries where visitors can see the king of the jungle in the wild. While tiger sightings are never guaranteed, a number of India’s national parks are home to steady populations of this magnificent animal and provide good chances of an encounter. Whether from the back of a jeep or on a thrilling elephant-back safari, catching a glimpse of this magnificent predator in the depths of the jungle is a moment never to be forgotten.

With the incredible diversity of species in India, the tiger is not the only attraction for wildlife enthusiasts. A incredible range of habitats create a home for a number of birds and animals, often uniting species common to Europe with those predominantly found in Asia. Visitors to the hills and plains of central India can expect to see tigers, elephants, monkeys, leopards, wild dog, rhinos and a variety of antelope. The Ganges River is inhabited by crocodiles, sea turtles, snakes and fish, while the arid habitat north of Rajasthan is home to desert-adapted species. India’s jungles shelter a multitude of primates, including rhesus macaque and grey langur. Sloth bear, leopard, jungle cat and parrots are found in the tropical forests of the south. The inhospitable climate of the Himalayas is home to yaks, camels, ibexes and mountain goats, as well as both black and brown bear.

Nor is all of India’s wildlife found on land. The Lakshadweep Islands, as well as the warm waters of the Bay of Bengal preserve some beautiful coral reefs, with exceptional marine life. Bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles and a spectacular array of tropical fish are found beneath the waves.
