Kaziranga National Park
Famous for its sightings of India’s one-horned rhino, Kaziranga National Park also offers exceptional elephant viewing opportunities. A World Heritage Site, it is recognised as a biodiversity hotspot thanks to its incredible range of bird and animal species, and diverse habitats. Covering grasslands, marshes and tropical forests, the vast expanse of the park stretches from the banks of the Brahmaputra River to the dense forests of the Mikir Hills.
- Kaziranga boasts a thriving population of one-horned rhino, Asian elephant and Asiatic wild buffalo, as well as the swamp deer known as barasingha, wild boar, sloth bear and many others.
- Its dense vegetation creates the ideal breeding conditions for many species of large cats, including tiger, leopard and jungle cat.
- India’s only ape, the Hoolock gibbon, lives in the jungles side by side with langurs and macaques.
- Endangered Gangetic dolphin can be seen in the Brahmaputra River, while smooth coated otter frolic in the waters of its tributary, the Dipholu.
- Some of the largest snakes in the world, including the reticulated and Indian pythons, king cobra and branded krait, are found here.
- The reserve is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with almost 500 species encountered here, including many migrants.
