RISHIKESH

Spread along the banks of the Ganges River, the holy city of Rishikesh lays claim to the title of Yoga Capital of the World. Thronged with ashrams, temples, shrines, pilgrims and sadhus, or spiritual men, Rishikesh is marked by an atmosphere uniquely its own.

  • One of the city’s two suspension bridges over the Ganges, the Lakshman Jhulla offers a magnificent view of the multi-story temples of Swarg Niwas and Shri Trayanbakshwar. Dozens of shrines to every imaginable Hindu deity crowd their many tiers. A cacophony of bell-clanging and chanting rises each morning and evening as devotees prepare for their rituals.
  • South of the Laksham Jhulla lies the spiritual community of Swarg Ashram, with its temples, ashrams, bazaars, sadhus and bathing ghats where religious ceremonies are performed at sunrise and sunset.
  • Every evening the colourful ganga aarti takes place at the riverside temple of the Parmarth Niketan Ashram, when baskets holding lighted oil lamps are floated down the waters of the Ganges to the accompaniment of singing and chanting.
  • The abandoned Maharishni Ashram is further south along the river’s banks.
  • Sandy beaches are ideal for lazing in the sun and gentle hikes lead to a number of beautiful waterfalls.
  • Rishikesh is also ideally positioned for river-rafting and mountain treks.
