Kumarakom
A sleepy backwater town set on a beautiful emerald peninsula jutting into the waters of the Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom is a lush and green piece of paradise. A cluster of tiny islands nestles among an intricate web of mangrove forests, paddy fields and coconut groves, intersected by canals, lagoons and waterways. Hibiscus bushes lean across the smaller canals, forming a leafy green canopy punctuated by bright flowers. Water hyacinths float on the lake’s surface, creating a carpet of pale lilac blooms. Slender coconut palms sway in groves along the water’s edge.
- Country craft, boats and canoes explore the serene canals, while houseboats invite guests to while away the days leisurely meandering the lake’s waters.
- A large variety of local and migratory birds can be seen both around Vembanad Lake and in the nearby Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary.
- This laid-back tourist destination offers endless distractions, from boating, fishing and swimming to Ayurvedic massage, yoga and meditation.
- An endless selection of water sports awaits enthusiasts, including windsailing and waterskiing.
- During the Onam festival, the lake comes alive with the colourful spectacle of the snake boat races, an annual regatta when the sounds of singing and hundreds of splashing oars drift over the normally tranquil waters.
