Kanha National Park

KANHA NATIONAL PARK

Prime tiger wilderness, Kanha National Park was one of the first areas to be protected under Project Tiger, aimed at preserving this magnificent animal, and remains a renowned conservation area. At 1 945 km² (750 square miles), Kanha is one of India’s largest national parks and is renowned not only for its high tiger concentration, but as the last remaining habitat of the hard ground barasingha, or swamp deer, which was brought back from the brink of extinction thanks to the efforts of Kanha’s conservationists.

This picturesque reserve boasts the ideal habitat for both tigers and their prey species. Lush sal and bamboo forests are interspersed with vast grassy meadows known as maidans, while the Banjaar River, which forms the park’s southwestern border, provides a steady water source for the abundant wildlife. The central parklands are surrounded by a steep, horse-shoe shaped embankment that rises to the spectacular plateau of Bamhni Dar, which offers breathtaking views of the valley. Rocky crags and ravines are home to roosting birds or a variety of reptiles.

  • A huge population of various deer and antelope, including the extremely rare barasingha, supports a large number of tiger, leopard, jackal and wild dog.
  • The immense maidans create ideal grazing spots for the hundreds of chital, barasingha and sambar deer.
  • Wild pig, striped hyena, mouse deer, chinkara, chousingha, jungle cat, black buck, mongoose and langur are also regularly seen in the reserve.
  • The beautiful and diverse landscape of Kanha is also ideal for birdwatching, with over 200 bird species recorded.
