Khajuraho

KHAJURAHO

The rural village of Khajuraho is famous for its great temple complex, which features intricately carved buildings dating back as far as the 10th centuries. Some of India's most beautiful temples, containing the finest temple art in the world, rise above the jungle.

Split into three groups, the temples are renowned for artistic stonework and carvings. Thronged with gods, goddesses, warriors and musicians, as well as real and mythological animals, the buildings feature long horizontal panels filled with scenes of processions, battles and hunting parties. Carved with incredible skill, the figures pulse with life, leaping off the stone. The architecture of the temples is as magnificent as their decorations, with their soaring shikaras, or spires, designed to resemble the peaks of the Himalayas, known in Hindu lore as the abode of the god Shiva.

  • 25 temples out of the original 85 built can still be viewed.
  • The largest and grandest temple in the western group is Kandariya Mahadev, with its exquisitely carved entrance, and magnificent architecture and sculpture.
  • The most notable and largest of the Jain temples in the eastern group, Parsvanath is famous for its evocative sculpture of a woman removing a thorn from her foot.
  • Chaturbhuj Temple in the southern group boasts a large and intricately carved statue of the Hindu god Vishnu.
