Maheshwar (Ahilya Fort)

MAHESHWAR (AHILYA FORT)

Perched on the edge of a steep cliff overlooking the holy Narmada River in the sleepy town of Maheshwar, Ahilya Fort is an imposing 16th century fortification. With its historic ghats, or enormous stone steps leading down to the water, massive fort and temples, Maheshwar has long drawn a steady stream of pilgrims and travellers to the banks of the Narmada River, considered by some to be as sacred as the Ganges itself.

  • Towering above the brightly painted local homes, with their old wooden doorways and overhanging balconies, the Ahilya Fort forms the focal point of the town. The imposing ramparts, built in the 16th century by the Emperor Akbar, enclose the elegant palace and selection of temples designed by the Holkar Queen Ahilya Bai, whose statue now stands in the vast courtyard. While the palace has been converted into a magnificent hotel, other areas of the fort remain accessible to the public. Hidden terraces and turrets compete for attention with open courtyards and verandas, while the ramparts open up onto spectacular views of the wide expanse of the Narmada River.
  • Halfway down the river banks are two stone temples, guarded by carved sentries, and decorated with ornate friezes and elaborate candle towers.
  • A flotilla of tiny boats flits from the ancient stone ghats across the water, taking visitors to the Baneshwar Temple, set on a tiny island in the middle of the river.
