Panna National Park

PANNA NATIONAL PARK

One of the most pristine, quiet and beautiful of India’s wilderness areas, Panna National Park is the ideal place to escape to for serene appreciation of the country’s sheer natural beauty. The diverse landscape of gorges, plateaus, forests and the majestic Ken River creates surprises around every corner. Situated in the Vindhya Hills, the spectacular scenery of Panna, from the dry deciduous forests and grasslands to the serene Ken River, is home to a wide diversity of wildlife.

  • Although the tiger population of the park is sparse, Panna is home to no less than five other species of cat - leopard, jungle cat, leopard cat, rusty spotted cat and caracal.
  • Hyenas, wild dogs, jackals, wolves and foxes are also found here, together with India’s ‘Big Four’ snakes, the spectacled cobra, Russel’s viper, saw scaled viper and common krait.
  • The spotted chital deer, sambar and nilgai can be seen among the grasslands, while the denser thickets shelter wild boar, troops of langur monkeys with their long tails and bushy eyebrows, striped squirrels and ruddy mongoose.
  • Panna is a magnificent birding destination, with more than 200 species, from the majestic peacock to a wide selection of eagles, hawks and buzzards, as well as a multitude of smaller species, from woodpeckers to rollers, bee eaters, kingfishers and starlings. Fish eagles, cormorants and darters can be found along the banks of the Ken River, renowned as one of the cleanest waterways in India.
  • Meandering through the reserve for over 55 km (35 miles), the tree-lined river habitat forms the central experience at Panna. Boat rides operated by the park provide visitors with an opportunity to view mugger and marsh crocodiles, as well as rock monitors and other reptiles. Breathtaking river views take in the ruins of temples and the ancient hunting lodges of the maharajas.
