Corbett National Park

CORBETT NATIONAL PARK

India’s first national park, Corbett is also one of the most picturesque, with its spectacular location on the banks of the Ramganga River in the foothills of the Himalayas. Founded in 1936, the park was named after Jim Corbett, hunter and author, as well as renowned conservationist and photographer.

Covering 1 320 km² (530 square miles) of grassland, sal forest and river habitat, the reserve boasts an outstanding diversity of wildlife and birdlife. Guests explore the park in open jeeps or on the back of an elephant in search of an unforgettable glimpse of the magnificent tiger or the elusive leopard.

  • Resident herds of elephant share the unspoiled stretches of the reserve with black bear, wild boar and sloth bear.
  • Jackals, jungle cats and a variety of langur monkeys and macaques inhabit the depths of the forest, while several special of deer, including the spotted chital, sambar, hog deer and barking deer, make themselves at home in the grasslands.
  • Mugger crocodiles, gharial, otters and monitor lizards inhabit the banks of the Ramganga River. 
  • The Ramganga Reservoir attracts large numbers of birds, both residents and migrants, with over 600 species spotted in the reserve. Open watchtowers near the reservoir and throughout the park are the ideal spot to indulge in peaceful contemplation. 
  • The small museum at Dhangarhi Gate showcases a selection of interesting exhibits, while a number of shops outside the park entrance sell utterly delicious bottles of clear Corbett honey.
