JAISALMER

A 12th century fortress town in the midst of the stark and brooding Thar Desert, Jaisalmer offers a rich blend of history, legend and fine architecture. Situated along an ancient camel trade route in the remote westernmost corner of Rajasthan, the city invokes an air of mystery that draws on the compelling beauty of the desert.

  • A true citadel city, Jaisalmer is dominated by its impressive fort. Created entirely out of yellow sandstone and illuminated by the clear desert light, the honey shades of the fort and surrounding buildings are responsible for Jaisalmer’s nickname of the Golden City. Boasting magnificent views over the Thar, the fort is the ideal vantage point to admire the unforgettable desert sunsets.
  • Inside the fort, a maze of steep, winding alleyways leads towards the ancient seven-story palace of Jaisalmer’s former rulers.
  • Thronging the narrow streets are 19th century havelis, ornate mansions whose stone and wood facades are so intricately carved that they look like the finest of lace.
  • At Bhatia Market visitors can browse for breathtaking embroidery, bedspreads, mirror-work wall hangings, oil lamps, stonework and antiques.
  • Intrepid travellers can venture into the heart of the desert on camel safaris.
  • Dancers and musicians perform in the light of bonfires at night.

    KNOW?

The magnificent Tilon-ki-Pol gateway on the road from Jaisalmer to Gadi Sakar Lake is said to have been built by a famous prostitute, in spite of permission being refused by the local maharaja, who felt it would insult his dignity to pass beneath it. The gate was hastily constructed while the maharaja was away, with a Krishna temple added on top to prevent him from destroying it.
