AMANKORA PUNAKHA

Remote tranquillity in a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse

  • Near the magnificent Punakha Dzong
  • Just eight wood-panelled suites
  • Hiking along the Mo Chhu river
  • Meditation, reiki and massage treatments at the spa

Located in a beautiful green valley between the Dochu La Pass and the majestic Punakha Dzong, the remote Amankora Punakha is accessed by means of a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu river. Built around a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse with a colourful history, the original vegetable dye wall paintings are still preserved in the quaint three-storey structure. The main guest area in the old farmhouse incorporates a dining room and traditional Altar Room, as well as a courtyard with a tea pavilion for al fresco dining. Eight suites located in three rammed-earth buildings are situated in a fragrant orange orchard with scenic views across the rice fields and up the Punakha Valley. Each suite features wood-panelled interiors, a traditional bukhari wood burning stove, king-sized bed, terrazzo-clad bath and daybed. The suites are individually heated and air-conditioned.

A highlight of a stay at Amankora is an excursion to the nearby Punakha Valley and famous Punakha Dzong. Guests canalso  hike along the banks of the Mo Chhu river and through terraces of rice, chillies and cabbage to the Khamsum Yuelley National Chorten, a three-storey monument housing beautiful paintings by the Queen of Bhutan. After your exertions, relax in the intimate spa with meditation and reiki treatments, as well as a range of massage therapies.
