Bringing the beautiful backwaters of Kerala to your very doorstep, the Kumarakom Lake Resort is made up of carefully reconstructed luxury 16th century traditional homesteads known as manas. Authentic heritage abodes, the selection of rooms, villas and suites is traditionally styled though luxuriously modern. Elegant open-roofed bathrooms are set in small, aesthetically designed courtyards, while some of the suites have their own private pools. Ettukettu, the specialty restaurant, is set in a princely eight-sided mansion with two central courtyards that calls to mind the grandeur of Kerala's regal architecture. Although a wide range of continental, Chinese, Mughlai and north Indian dishes is served, the real star of the show is ethnic Keralan cooking, using a wide variety of seafood and flavoured with rich coconuts and fragrant spices. The Vembanad seafood bar offers a selection of freshly caught seafood, while local snacks are served in the relaxed ambiance of Thattukada, a traditional tea shop. Reserve a private dinner for two in the romantic poolside pavilion, set on the very shores of the lake.
Expert Ayurveda treatments, as well as yoga and meditation, are provided in the Ayurmana spa, a four-sided mansion transported in its entirety from its original location. A large, tranquil pool set on the lakeside present the illusion of being part of the shimmering lake. A fitness centre offers state of the art equipment, while a selection of cruises, water sports and sightseeing tours is also on offer.
